Professor Chu Chia Ning is a distinguished scholar and a retired professor from the Department of Chinese at National Chengchi University (NCCU), where he made significant contributions to the field of Chinese linguistics and phonology over his long and illustrious career. Renowned for his expertise in Chinese phonetics, historical phonology, and linguistic theory, Professor Chu has been an influential figure both within Taiwan and on the international academic stage.
After his retirement from NCCU, Professor Chu continued to play an active role in the global academic community. He currently holds the position of visiting professor at the University of Wales, UK, a role he has maintained since 2021. He also serves as an Honorary Member of the Chinese Phonetics Society, and was appointed as the Chair of the Ministry of Education’s Committee on Chinese Character Phonetic Standards from 2021 to 2023. Further solidifying鞏固his influence, he is an Overseas Academic Committee Member of the Korean “National Language Education Society” and an Editorial Board Member for the SUSS Humanities Book Series at Singapore University of Social Sciences.
Throughout his career, Professor Chu has earned numerous accolades, including being named a Lifetime Honorary Professor at the Dharma Drum Humanities College in the Department of Buddhist Studies and receiving the Chair Professorship at National United University in 2013. His commitment to education and research has also earned him positions such as Distinguished Professor at National Chengchi University (2012–2014) and Chair of the Department of Chinese and Director of the Graduate Institute of Chinese at National Chung Cheng University (2000–2003). He also served as the President of the Chinese Phonetics Society from 2008 to 2012.
In addition to his academic roles, Professor Chu’s teaching and research have taken him across the globe. He has lectured at prestigious institutions including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA), Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic), Peking University, Tsinghua University, and the University of Vienna. His international engagement has further extended to lectures in Bordeaux, France, and Daito Bunka University in Japan, among many others. Professor Chu has also held visiting positions in various countries, including Dankook University in South Korea and École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris.
Professor Chu is a respected member of several leading international linguistic organizations, including the International Association of Chinese Linguistics (IACL), the Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA), and the European Association for Chinese Linguistics (EACL). His impact on the field is also evident through his participation in various academic committees and advisory roles.
